| HATS & HEADWEARFELT HATS |
Although we call this a cavalier hat because of its connection to the Musketeers in the 17th century, it was actually made popular during the 16th century by the Lansquenets, German mercenary soldiers, who decorated them with cuts and slashes braids and feathers....lots of feathers! Of course, it was worn much earlier and in other countries as well, but not as flamboyantly. This hat is a hat blank ready for you to embellish to your personal taste. This style of hat was worn over at least 3 centuries without changing a great deal because it was a functional cap worn by hunters and travelers. In period it was called a "bycocket" from the French words bec cocquet meaning "bird's beak or cock's beak". We call it the period baseball cap because it can be worn with the bill towards the front or facing behind. There are many paintings with the brim turned one way or another. The brim shaded the eyes on a sunny day and when worn backwards on a rainy day, it kept the rain off the neck. A very practical design! Pheasant feather not included - See Misc. Section S, M, L - See sizing chart below Black, Brown, Camel, Gray, Red

This small felt hat appears 4-sided because of the 4 slashes. Can be laced to the outside and aglets (metal tips) added to the laces for another stylish look worn among the nobility.
