METAL FRAMED PURSES

Until around the middle of the 16th century when pockets were sewn into clothing, purses and pouches were a necessary part of the wardrobe. The term "purse" was used for either a man's or woman's bag for carrying money and possessions (when the sleeve or cod-piece was not used). The framed purses were popular as early as the 15th century and were often falconer's bags. However, many paintings show nobility wearing this type of purse hanging from a belt or girdle and they were quite ornate by the end of the 16th century. Some of the frames were hoops or hoops attached to horizontal bars, while others were frames with clasps, both simple and ornate.
