During the Renaissance, clothing was fastened together in many ways. There were buttons made of fabric, metal, bone, seashells and wood. Clasps were used not only on cloaks but also on doublet, jerkins and bodices.
Eyelets, lacing rings and lacing eyes were other fastener choices during this time period. Although most eyelets were sewn with thread there is evidence of both lacing eyes and metal eyelets used on the same garment in Carlos Crivelli's Mary Magdelene painting. Leonardo da Vinci's Ginerva di' Benci (detail pictured on left) is one of the clearest examples of lacing rings used on a bodice.

Lacing Rings After a long search we were able to find a limited supply of 3/8" diameter rings suitable for lacing. These rings do not have an open section like jump rings nor do they have a welded section. They are made of one piece of metal with smooth sides so that it does not cut the thread. GARMENT LACERS

Alpine Lacer Lacers with an intricate floral design is an excellent closure for Italian Renaissance bodices and sleeves. Carlo Crivelli's paintings from the late 15th century shows lacers similar to these on the ladies bodices. Each lacer is slightly over 1" in length.
