HANDMADE PATERNOSTERS

PATERNOSTERS
Linear Prayer Beads

Paternosters could be a psalter with 150 beads or 50 beads for reciting 3 times. There were also crowns (corona in Latin) and chaplets with less than 50 beads for personal devotions/prayers. The number of beads and arrangement depended on the originating religious order and that group's focus.

As early as the 11th century some religious orders were allowed to substitute the Lord's Prayer for the Psalms to accommodate the lay brothers and sisters that were admitted to the order that were illiterate or unable to learn enough Latin for traditional devotion of the 150 Psalms of David. The beads themselves were called Paternosters, the Latin words for the "Our Father" at the beginning of the Lord's Prayer.

In that same century when the focus on the Virgin Mary became popular, the small beads were called "Ave Maria" (which is Latin for Hail Mary) and the beads that separated them were still called paternosters because the Lord's Prayer was said on these larger beads.

By the 14th century, the linear chaplet (usually in coral) became popular with men and was called Cavalierbetten which means "men praying."

Tenners or Gebetskette Zehners (prayer chain with 10 beads) became popular in the 16th century. As the name inplies, they were chaplets consisting of 10 beads. Sometimes another bead was added which was usually larger than the 10 beads and sometimes had bead caps and/or spacers separating it from the other beads. In addition to these beads there was a tassel, saint's metal, credo cross, crucifix or some kind of pendant. Often a number of these items were used in combination at the end of the prayer beads.

Pictured above is the Palace Gallery original that was offered to the general public in the gift shop of the Netherlands museum.

These metal components are not mass-produced!

They are hand-cast brass and available for a limited time in limited quanities!

Late 15th Century - Early 16th Linear Paternosters

Linear paternosters were still in use in the late 15th and early 16th centuries. There are a number of them in paintings that contain 10 or 11 beads and are strung with string or cord. In "St. Jerome in his Study" by Matteo di Giovanni, c.1492, in Harvard University Art Museum, Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA, there are 10 large multi-color beads with a loop at one end for hanging on the wall and a tassel on the other end. Two extant early 16th century linear rosaries have wire links, capped beads and a ring on one end for hanging. The one in the State Museum of Prussian Art Treasures - Berlin, Germany has a religious medallion hanging from the other end while the one in the Austrian Museum of Fine Art - Vienna has a cross hanging from the bottom.
