Medieval spellings were inconsistent. These inconsistencies are faithfully reproduced in these rings. In cases where the original rings shows signs of age or misspelled words, the replicas show the same imperfections.

Your purchase of these pieces helps support the museum community and independent jewelers dedicated to duplicating the workmanship of craftsmen from the past.
POESY RINGS
Poesy rings are rings with brief poems that express love sentiments inscribed either around the outside or on the inside of the band. This type of ring dates as early as classical times, when they were considered magical, having the power when worn to enforce the poesy engraved on them. (Tradition has it that there is a vein running directly from the fourth finger to the heart and words touching this vein have a special power.)

In the 16th and 17th century England and France, a wedding ring would invariably be inscribed with a sentiment of love, faith and hope. A silver betrothal ring would often be replaced with the same poesy ring in gold on marriage.

They reached their greatest popularity historically during the Renaissance when they were not only given as wedding rings, but used as a lover's token or simply as a means of showing fond regard or giving a gift. Many of Shakespeare's plays mention them such as Hamlet Act III, scene 2, "Is this a prologue or the poesy of a ring."

LAWYER RINGS
The tradition of giving Serjeants-at-Law or Lawyer's Rings upon admittance to the bar began in England sometime during the Plantagenet period in the early 1400's. The rings were simple bands inscribed around the outside with a legal verse in Latin referring to a contemporary event or a legal ideal.

POISON RINGS
CLEARANCE
Poison rings were first designed as an easy means of escape from imposed torture, humilating slavery, or agonizing death. Hannibal is known to have turned to the poison in his ring when about to be delivered to the Romans. The Emperor Heliogabalus also wore a poison ring in order to be prepared for any emergency. The signet ring of Cesare Borgia, dated 1503 and still in existence, is a poison ring.

These hinged compartment rings are made of sterling silver and embellished with a semi-precious stone. The pictures are enlarged views of the ring details. The actual stones are 3/16" to 1/4" in diameter. The style may vary slightly from the pictures.

PUZZLE RINGS
The puzzle ring has its beginnings in the ancient betrothal ring known as the geminel, gemmel, gimmel, or "twin ring". Though this ring later came to be formed of two, three, or four circles, fitted together as one when upon the finger, the name remained the same. Sometimes the two circlet rings ended in miniature hands which, given the proper twist, clasped firmly when upon the finger. This type of ring became popular from the fourteenth to the sixteenth centuries in France, Italy and England.
This style of puzzle ring is made of sterling silver and comes with a printed solution should it accidently come apart or if you are daring enough to wear it without the wire closure!
