REPRODUCTIONS OF 15TH CENTURY ITALIAN TAROCCHI DECKS

Italy holds the honor of having produced several of the earliest known hand-painted playing card packs that contain the mystical and allegorical trump cards included in tarocchi decks.

The term tarocchi was used in Italy in the early sixteenth century and quite probably in the fifteenth century, to describe the complete 78-card deck consisting of 22 Major Arcana (Arcano) or trump cards and 56 Minor Arcana or suit cards. The words tarocchi and tarocco are often used interchangeably, although tarocchi is actually the plural of tarocco. Tarot the French derivative of tarocchi, has come into widespread use in the English language.

Visconti-Sforza
Pierpont Morgan Tarocchi Deck

The original of this tarocchi deck carries heraldic symbols from both the Visconti and Sforza families who were the ruling families in Milan, Italy during the Renaissance. It is believed to be a wedding gift to Bianca Visconti at her marriage to Francesco Sforza (the first Sforza to hold the title of Duke of Milan) in 1441. This deck "The Visconti-Sforza Pierpont Morgan Tarocchi Deck" uses the authentic color tones from the nearly complete extant deck of 74 extant cards plus four cards recreated to replace cards missing from the initial deck. The original cards are now divided between the Pierpont Morgan Library in New York, the Accademia Carrara, and the Colleoni family of Bergamo, Italy. These period cards are much larger than the modern card - 3 5/8" X 7"
